Patriot Point – Phase 1

Old North Utilities Services

Project Type:

Water / Wastewater

Fort Bragg, North Carolina

The purpose of this project was to bring the necessary water and sanitary sewer infrastructure to the 600-acre site south of Chicken Road referred to as Patriot Point, which primarily serves Special Forces and contains a number of facilities for communications training, battle command training, engineering training, battalion operations including housing, vehicle maintenance, tactical equipment maintenance, civil affairs, etc.  Following design of the wastewater collection and water distribution/storage system by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering, Old North Utilities Services (ONUS), needed a firm to effectively manage all of the details of the complex coordination necessary to ensure that approximately 26 miles of water and sewer main, an elevated storage tank, and two lift stations were installed meeting all technical and schedule requirements at Fort Bragg…a busy and critical military installation.  This project posed significant schedule, stakeholder, and safety challenges, including addressing significant redesign during construction, coordination with multiple military groups to ensure ongoing field operations were not affected by construction, and ensuring construction and operations personnel remained safe in military training areas.

McAdams played multiple roles on this significant project for ONUS.  McAdams coordinated a required redesign of the water system and to facilitate the approval process for the waterline and storage tank redesign.  In addition, McAdams was called upon to provide project management during construction, construction inspection, coordination, administration, and closeout services for this project, which consists of the following infrastructure:

  • 13,500 LF of 4”-12” water main
  • 250,000 gallon elevated storage tank
  • 17,000 LF of 8”-24” gravity sewer
  • 107,000 LF of 12” force main
  • Two submersible lift stations

McAdams construction observation and project management personnel worked closely with the contractor to ensure that all military stakeholder groups were communicated with in an effective manner, and that the contractor was able to complete construction as efficiently and as safe as possible.
