Park Master Plan
City Lake Park
City of High Point
The City of High Point commissioned McAdams to complete a park master plan and construction drawings for the renovation of their oldest and most popular park, City Lake Park. Originally built in the 1930’s and inspired by Luna Park in Coney Island, New York, the park offered residents the largest pool east of the Mississippi. The design team completed thorough site; architectural and pool assessments to determine what improvements would be required to bring the site; pool and gymnasium into compliance; and revitalize the park to draw regional visitors. The project team engaged City staff, residents and stakeholders to understand what amenities and facilities were beloved to the community and what should remain, as well as to identify recreational needs and wants for park upgrades.
The design team developed a park master plan and construction drawings that focuses on site improvements, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant access to all amenities and facilities; additional parking; improved vehicular and pedestrian circulation; repurposing of outdated and underutilized spaces; expanded amenities; and connections to nearby destinations, such as the Piedmont Environmental Center. Architectural improvements were focused on restoring the gymnasium; updating building systems; renovating the locker rooms; and adding event space and supporting facilities. Pool improvements included the addition of a stand-up water slide; splash pad; lap lanes; aquatics ninja course; expanded deck space and shade; and a lazy river.
The finalized master plan includes a summary of the assessments; community engagement; proposed site, architectural and pool improvements; and an estimate of probable construction cost.
