McAdams President + CEO Mike Munn Talks Growth and Change on Morrissey Goodale’s “Word on the Street” Podcast

McAdams President and CEO, Mike Munn, recently joined Morrissey Goodale’s Word on the Street podcast to share insights on change management in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. In the episode, Mike discusses how McAdams has embraced growth, adaptability, and cultural alignment as key components of long-term success.

The McAdams Approach to Growth

During the conversation, Mike emphasized that growth—whether organic or through acquisitions—should be seen as an opportunity to learn and evolve beyond comfort zones. He explained that while McAdams has historically prioritized organic growth, the company remains strategic and selective when considering acquisitions.

“Our company has overwhelmingly been oriented toward organic growth. We’re a picky buyer, so acquisitions are not continuous. Having said that, we closed two deals at the end of 2024, that was an anomaly for us. But culture compatibility is a top priority. We’re not just acquiring companies to keep them the way they are; we seek organizations that have the appetite and desire for growth but may lack the infrastructure or resources to do so.”

With a five-year average organic growth rate of 18%, McAdams thrives in a state of constant change. Mike acknowledged that growth can be challenging, but strong leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to core values help navigate transitions successfully.

The Role of Leadership in Change Management

Mike highlighted the importance of leaders being change agents and guiding teams through evolving business landscapes. He reflected on his own journey to CEO, crediting mentorship from McAdams’ founder, John McAdams, for shaping his approach to leadership.

“Change is easier when you have a great mentor. John McAdams brought wisdom that helped me and the company recognize that certain things, like our culture and commitment to one another, should never change, regardless of circumstances.”

Staying True to Core Values Amid Change

At McAdams, growth and change are guided by foundational values that remain constant in both prosperous and challenging times. These values ensure that as McAdams expands, it continues to prioritize cultural alignment, efficiency, and innovation.
