Project

Hominy Swamp Preliminary Assessment

The City of Wilson contracted McAdams to conduct a limited stream conditions assessment to evaluate opportunities for flood reduction through stream mitigation and nutrient offset projects along Hominy Swamp Creek. The project section of Hominy Swamp Creek has a broad FEMA regulated floodplain with adjacent properties experiencing repetitive flooding from recent hurricanes and major storm events.

McAdams’ focus was to identify and prioritize the primary mitigation function for five project reaches along the identified corridor. These areas refer to an unnamed tributary (UT) to Hominy Swamp Creek that runs parallel to Elizabeth Road and the section of Hominy Swamp Creek from Elizabeth Road to Goldsboro Street stream crossings. In total, McAdams studied approximately 5,000 linear feet of stream in detail through development of proposed stream alignments and preliminary grading to estimate volume of flood storage created at bankfull elevation. Preliminary channel geometry was then modeled in HEC-RAS to assess flood reduction potential along the corridor. Nutrient offset opportunities were also evaluated along each reach for nitrogen credit potential through implementation of Stormwater Control Measures at concentrated outfalls along the corridor. Overall mitigation potential and primary mitigation function for the project reaches were evaluated and identified for future project prioritization by the City of Wilson.
