Project
Fayetteville Street Streetscape
McAdams is leading the City of Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street Streetscape Plan project in collaboration with landscape architecture firm SWA/Balsley to bring this bold vision to life. This signature project focuses on reimagining North Carolina’s historic “Main Street” as a dynamic, pedestrian-friendly corridor that reflects both its ceremonial role and its potential as a thriving civic space. Building on the Downtown Raleigh Alliance’s Economic Development Strategy and “10 Big Ideas” framework, the plan addresses the full streetscape—landscaping, lighting, furnishings, and public art—while also incorporating preliminary utility redesigns and phased implementation strategies to guide long-term investment.

The project is grounded in a collaborative, community-driven approach. McAdams and SWA are leading a comprehensive process that includes site analysis, stakeholder engagement, and design development to create actionable standards that balance historic character with modern needs. This process emphasizes improving walkability, enhancing public gathering spaces, and supporting retail, events, and daily use, all while integrating infrastructure upgrades and sustainable design principles. Engagement with local businesses, residents, and civic leaders ensures that the vision reflects diverse perspectives and fosters a sense of ownership among stakeholders.
As one of the City’s most high-profile public realm initiatives, the Fayetteville Street Streetscape Plan exemplifies McAdams’ ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder urban design efforts. By combining technical expertise, creative placemaking, and a clear implementation roadmap, the project will strengthen the corridor’s identity, attract new activity, and create an inviting environment for all who live in, work in, or visit Downtown Raleigh. The result will be a revitalized Fayetteville Street that honors its legacy while positioning it for a vibrant future. Raleigh City Council approved a $1 million investment to kick-start phase one implementation in early 2026.
