Project
Sunningdale Lane Culvert
The existing culvert crossing along Sunningdale Lane in Statesville, North Carolina has seen significant flooding in recent years that has resulted in overtopping, washouts and unsafe driving conditions. In 2018, the City of Statesville responded to a complete failure of the 48-inch corrugated metal pipe system that resulted in closure of the existing roadway. At that time, the City of Statesville performed an emergency repair and replaced the existing system with an in-kind 48-inch reinforced concrete pipe. This replacement ultimately proved insufficient in providing adequate conveyance as the roadway continued to experience overtopping and washouts. In 2022, the City of Statesville hired McAdams to conduct a study of the existing conditions at Sunningdale Lane and recommend necessary infrastructure improvements to meet the City level of service. Due to the height of the roadway; existing sanitary and water infrastructure nearby; and topography of the site, McAdams recommends a seven- by 10-foot concrete box culvert to properly convey contributing runoff. The implementation of the proposed box culvert would improve conditions for residents, as well as advance natural stream conditions for existing aquatic life. McAdams supported the City of Statesville in successful application for grant funding through the North Carolina Golden Long-Term Economic Advancement Foundation (LEAF) to aid in costs for the proposed improvements. Design of the proposed improvements is complete with bidding of the project to be done in May 2024.
