Walnut Creek Greenway Design

The Walnut Creek Greenway is one of the oldest greenways in the Capital Greenway system. It has been showing it’s age for several years now and the City is bringing it up to current standards while also making it more resilient to flooding and closures from storm events. McAdams is looking at re-routing and widening the trail where possible. Structures will be evaluated and widened, as needed, and decking will be looked at for reducing the amount of timber and replacing with concrete. Because this is an existing trail, McAdams is also working with the City to ensure pedestrian detours are available during construction and public engagement has reached as many people as possible.

The Greenway Design team has been coordinating with all project stakeholders to evaluate opportunities for cost savings while enhancing the overall user experience and safety of the corridor. Key goals for the corridor include improving at-grade crossings with roadways; upgrading structures to be wider and more easily maintainable; raising or relocating sections of the trail to ensure quicker reopening after storm or flood events; and providing alternative, accessible routes and connections to serve users of all ages and abilities.
