Project
Minnesota Twins Baseball Stadium
Home to the Minnesota Twins, Target Field is a 39,500-seat Major League Baseball stadium located in downtown Minneapolis. Since opening in 2010, the ballpark has become one of the premier venues in professional baseball, combining a fan-focused design with a high-performance natural grass playing surface. The field consists of 2.5 acres of a four-way blend Kentucky bluegrass system designed to withstand the demands of an MLB schedule while maintaining exceptional playability and appearance. Situated on an eight-acre site in Minneapolis’ warehouse district, Target Field represents the level of quality, performance and attention to detail required at the highest level of sport.

Turf for a Tight Site
Target Field sits on just eight acres in Minneapolis’ historic warehouse district, a remarkably compact footprint for a modern Major League Baseball stadium, which typically requires at least ten acres. Surrounded by rail lines, an interstate and parking structures on nearly every side, the ballpark’s design team had to maximize every available square foot. Within those tight site constraints, Sports Design Group was responsible for delivering the playing surface, helping create a field that meets the performance standards of professional baseball while fitting seamlessly within one of the league’s most space-efficient ballparks.
A Field Built on Sand
The sod was grown in Fort Morgan, Colorado, in soil composed of 90% sand, a carefully selected growing medium that promotes rapid drainage and helps minimize rain-related delays. Before the sod was installed, crews constructed the field’s foundation in Minnesota, placing and leveling approximately 18,000 tons of sand, gravel and peat. Every batch of material was rigorously tested for consistency, helping create uniform growing conditions and ensuring the field would perform evenly from sideline to sideline.
