Project
NC State University, Venture Courtyards
Centennial Campus
The Venture Courtyards at NC State University’s Centennial Campus seamlessly integrate into the campus fabric, enhancing its connectivity and creating a sense of intimacy and ease of navigation. Each of the three spaces offers unique characteristics that support social gatherings at various scales. One courtyard focuses on open gatherings on a large deck, another provides a quiet and protected outdoor workspace, and the third space creates a secluded courtyard for staff and students, reinforcing a sense of community within the broader campus context. Together, the courtyards establish a cohesive neighborhood identity, offering a human-scaled atmosphere amid the surrounding office, research, and education buildings. Unified by common landscape and hardscape materials, the courtyards prioritize visibility, safety, and comfort while ensuring universal accessibility for all users. This dynamic and inviting environment reflects a careful balance of functionality, aesthetics, and inclusivity.

All three courtyards were created as retrofits and adaptive reuse projects, transforming underutilized exterior spaces into purposeful environments that better serve the University community. This adaptive approach demonstrates the value of reimagining existing campus assets, allowing NC State to enhance connectivity, sustainability, and social engagement without requiring new development.
