Project

Swift Creek Greenway

The Swift Creek Greenway is one of the largest greenway projects undertaken by Wake County in recent history. Spanning six and a half miles from Lake Wheeler Park in Raleigh to Buffalo Road in Garner, this trail follows Swift Creek through the Swift Creek watershed and connects Lake Wheeler to Lake Benson. Because of the nature of the watershed, there is not development immediately adjacent to Swift Creek, which allows for the Greenway to provide a unique experience and access to the high-quality waterway and natural areas. This project includes three new trailheads — two of which include restrooms, multiple boardwalks and pedestrian bridges, two at-grade road crossings off Lake Wheeler Road and Old Stage road and a Norfolk Southern (NS) rail crossing. In addition to National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design criteria, the design for this project will adhere to American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association standards, as well as the Norfolk South Public Improvement Projects Manual.
