Amay James Urban Agriculture Park, Master Plan

Funded through a Planning Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, Urban Agriculture and Innovation Production Competitive Grant Program, the Amay James Urban Agriculture Park study began by exploring the feasibility of an urban agricultural park and ways to provide food and land sovereignty to the surrounding community. The McAdams team, alongside Mecklenburg County staff, have investigated several working community gardens; non-profit farming operations; and university lead efforts focused on providing food and learning opportunities for communities experiencing food insecurity. These trips across North Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C. help to educate the team on the variety of possibilities and mechanisms for providing food production and learning programs that could be implemented at the park.

Through a large public engagement event and two design charettes, the plan evolved into a vision for the park to provide opportunities for agricultural learning, access to recreation, gathering spaces for the community, and ways to connect back to the neighborhood’s vibrant history. The park’s amenities had the intended focus to provide safe recreation for all ages and abilities, connections to the natural environment, and connectivity of trails and greenways within the site and the surrounding neighborhoods. Main features will include: a greenhouse; research plots; community gardening space; indoor and outdoor learning kitchens; gathering spaces; playground; basketball court; outdoor fitness equipment; shelter; open green; walking loop and trails connection through preserved naturally areas that will connect to the previously planned Erwin Creek Greenway; and an outdoor research lab adjacent to a proposed wetland to treat stormwater.
